HP PC Problems

I've been PC challenged to post many items that I've wanted to share. But in early January '08, my HP PC laptop had major problems. Dos menu shared that these PC issues were most likely a result of a hard drive failure or a cd-dvd drive failure and I should contact the manufacturer.

Three months have gone by and while I've contacted HP many times, received parts, sent my PC to HP for repair, I'm still left with an unusable PC and needing to borrow friend's PCs or use PCs at public libraries.

My "hopeful" personality is now at question, but with luck I'll be able to soon get on track of sharing some very important info with you. So please have patience (funny how HP stands for Have Patience).

I'm about to go out and buy a non-HP PC as I've concluded HP isn't capable of resolving my PC issues.

Paget's Disease of the Nipple

I recently received an email, from a friend, that shared insights from a women with personal experience of Paget's Disease. As this form of breast cancer is quite rare, many are unaware of it. Thus, I thought it worthy to share some insight that was provided via this email message and is available on the internet. But for the best info, I want to recommend you chat directly with your medical professional.

Paget's Disease (insight from original email message): This is a rare form of breast cancer, and is on the outside of the breast, on the nipple and aureole It appeared as a rash, which later became a lesion with a crusty outer edge. I would not have ever suspected it to be breast cancer but it was. My nipple never seemed any different to me, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that. Sometimes, it itched and was sore, but other than that it didn't bother me. It was just ugly and a nuisance, and could not be cleared up with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist for the dermatitis on my eyes just prior r to this outbreak. They seemed a little concerned but did not warn me it could be cancerous.

What are the symptoms?

> 1. A persistent redness, oozing, and crusting of your nipple causing it to itch and burn (As I stated, mine did not itch or burn much, and had no oozing I was aware of, but it did have a crust along the outer edge on one side.)
>
> 2. A sore on your nipple that will not heal. (Mine was on the aureole area with a whitish thick looking area in center of nipple).
>
> 3. Usually only one nipple is effected. How is it diagnosed? Your doctor will do a physical exam and should suggest having a mammogram o f both breasts, done immediately. Even though the redness, oozing and crusting closely resemble dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast. Your doctor should order a biopsy of your sore to confirm what is going on.

Showcase Story: Armstrong Gardens

One of my favorite things to do is to spend time working in the garden. I love to see the changes in my garden throughout the year. And I enjoy time spent tending my garden. For me, anything to do with gardening is very relaxing. It must be in my blood as I recall my grandmother and my mother enjoying working in their gardens.

Armstrong Garden Centers is a very nice garden center. They have a great plant selection, garden accessories, gift items, and they offer many free classes. I enjoy attending their classes, walking thru their delightful centers, but mostly, I enjoy when I can bring home some of their wonderful plants and add them to my yard (or give to a friend).

So, I want to encourage you to stop by your local Armstrong Garden Center soon. You'll enjoy their display of healthy plants and garden art! And they have a very helpful and cheerful staff to assist you select the right plants for your yard.

Every Story is Worth Being Told

Every story, your story, my story, the story of your sister, your mother, your aunt, your friend, all the stories need to be told. Regardless of your story being about your personal battle against breast cancer, or your story being about how your heart has now led you down a path to want to fight against breast cancer, due to the loss of a loved one, that you miss someone who died of breast cancer, or that you are worried about someone who is dealing with breast cancer, or that your story is the wonderful story of being a survivor. Your story needs to be told.

Washington Post Article on Breast Cancer

There is an interesting news article on the web, published by the Washington Post. This article focuses on a study in Israel about a theory that light at night may cause interference with the production of a key hormone. The end result, according to this theory, is that this light can increase the risk of breast cancer.

To clarify, this theory does not say that light at night is the cause for breast cancer, but that there is a strong correlation that those exposed to higher rates of light at night have a higher rate of breast cancer.

Another Wonderful Introduction

I find it so energizing to meet people who are making a difference. While there are many who are focused on fighting breast cancer (bless all of them), I recently came across a group called "Boobs On The Move" and wanted to understand how they fit in with my personal objectives of fighting breast cancer and raising funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure. It was my pleasure to learn that the Booms On The Move is a delightful group committed to fighting breast cancer and helping to raise funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure! And, they are certainly doing a great job at it.

While I'll report more on "Boobs On the Move", in future postings, I want to increase awareness of a nearterm event that I hope all of you will support.

On Sat., February 23rd 7am - Noon, Boobs On the Move is hosting their 4th Annual Garage Sale. This event is to be held at 1473 Village View, Encinitas, CA 92024 phone# 760-634-1654. While they can use some volunteer help (e.g. haulers, sorters, sales support), they are accepting donations thru this Friday. And what they need, for this fundraising event to be successful, is for people to come and shop at this great garage sale. So, please go check out this garage sale fundraiser this coming Saturday. Last year this event had donations from 18 families and raised $1,800.

Also, on Sat., Feb 23rd from 7pm-11pm Boobs on the Move is helping to raise funds for Komen by a "CRASH ENCORE VIDEO PREMIERE PARTY". Check out "Story Weather" video premiere from local band, Crash Encore. Downtown at Buzz Clothing, 630 10th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101 619-269-3764. Great event for singles and couples. Showcase Story: The Eggery

We all know starting off the day with a good breakfast is good for us. But doing it at "The Eggery" really starts things off for a great day! Can't do breakfast, lunch at The Eggery is absolutely wonderful.

Everytime I've eaten at The Eggery it always starts with a delightful greeting at the door and friendly wait staff. They have a good size menu for both breakfast and lunch, along with a large beverage selection.

My husband's favorite breakfast is Eggs Benedict, which The Eggery does an outstanding job. Besides the traditional Eggs Benedict, they also serve Bacado Benedict, Florentine Benedict, West Coast Benedict and California Benedict - all very tasty.

It is very difficult for me to choose my favorite at The Eggery. While I'm an eater of tradition, usually eating the same thing, at The Eggery everything I've ever tasted has been excellent. Great egg-scrambles, fluffy omelettes, light crepes and pancakes, along with fresh toast and waffles. They also have a healthy light menu, such as yogurt, granola and cholestral free eggs. And of course, Fritattas and a south of the border menu selection.

Their wonderful lunch menu has many tasty sandwiches, grill selection, burgers and salads. And I do believe their Oriental Chicken Salad is one of the best available in San Diego County.

The Eggery is located in San Diego at 4150 Mission Blvd #121, San Diego, CA 92109 858-274-3122. They are open from 7am to 2pm every day of the week. They also have two locations in Phoenix, AZ. 5109 N. 44th Street and at 50 E. Camelback.

Sat., February 23rd - Row For The Cure
This is a fun event that welcomes those that want to come get their lst experience with rowing a shell, as well as the advance and competitive rowers. It is also a wonderful spectator event. Help is needed to get the word out to encourage people to come on down to the North Ski Beach the day of the event. We have flyers that can be dropped off, but we are hoping volunteers will help recruit their friends, family & co-workers to come on down. Registration at the event opens at 7am and racing runs from 8am to 11am, with an awards ceremony. Perfect opportunity to bring your bikes, or come enjoy a walk along the bay, or simply bring a blanket and enjoy the sunshine while being entertained on Mission Bay!

Row For The Cure

Since 1994, Row for the Cure has raised over $500,000 benefiting local affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in ten cities across the United States.

In San Diego, the Row For The Cure event was originally scheduled in October '07. Due to the San Diego wildfires the Row For Cure was rescheduled till Sat., Feb 23rd 2008. These fires were very unfortunate and have altered the lives of many people. Obviously, dealing with those impacted by the fires took precedence and the fundraising efforts of Row For The Cure were let go in Fall '07 while the community and rowers focused on helping families impacted by these fires.

But the tradition and energy of the rowers did not break their spirit and they scheduled a new date for their annual Row For The Cure fundraiser. The time has now come to rally behind these rowers and their fundraising efforts. To clarify, this event is not limited to rowers. It is a fun family event. It is a great event to participate, as well as to observe. And it is a fundraising event that will help make a difference in the lives of many, through the fundraising efforts. As such, I want to encourage everyone to come to this event and help raise funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

7am - 11am, Sat., Feb 23rd on the North Ski Beach on Mission Beach. Rowers & kayakers of all ages and skill levels will participate in timed races and prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each category.

Participants can register on-line at www.regattacentral.com and there is a special category for non-rowers who would like to participate. The UC San Diego crew teams will be bringing their Rowing Barge, and individuals can sign up for a rowing experience!

“Breast cancer is a disease that has affected the families of several of our team members in recent years,” said UCSD rowing coach and Row for the Cure coordinator, Pattie Pinkerton. “As a team, we wanted to find a way for the San Diego water sports community to support Komen San Diego in their fight against breast cancer, so six years ago we launched Row for the Cure. Since then we’ve raised more than $80,000 for Komen San Diego, and at the same time we’ve gotten the community involved in a cause that is very near and dear to us.”

“We encourage all San Diegans to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month events during the month of October,” said Samm McDonald, president of the San Diego Affiliate of the Komen Foundation. “Proceeds from all Komen San Diego events held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month benefit the foundation and help us carry out our mission to increase breast cancer education, screening and treatment in San Diego. The contributions and involvement from local community members are what allow us to provide San Diegans with the research and education programs necessary to continue the fight against breast cancer.

Bake a cake to fight breast cancer - Cake Decorating Contest

In a previous posting I shared insights about a wonderful event scheduled Sat., March lst at Serra High School. A delightful group of seniors have scheduled a fun family event to help raise funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure. This event is planned around a 5K run/walk, but they have many additional events planned to help make this event a great family event:

- bake sale
- face painting
- booths

And they have added a cake decorating contest to this event! So I want to encourage all your cake decorators (amateaur, professional, or want-a-be) to sign up. This is going to be fun. Feel Your Boobies Foundation

There are many ways to help fight breast cancer, but it all needs to start with awareness! Individually we can all help to spread the word and encourage others to do regular self exams and get mamograms, as appropriate. Another way is to help support non-profits that raise funds to fight the cause. I'd like to share with you some insight on one which focuses on awareness and has a catchy name that is certainly easy to remember! They are making a difference in fighting breast cancer too!

The Feel Your Boobies Foundation was born in 2004 when a young breast cancer survivor simply designed a t-shirt for her friends to get their attention and a little giggle. It has expanded into an international awareness campaign focused on using innovative methods for getting young people to talk about breast cancer which has become the mission of the Feel Your Boobies Foundation.

The Feel Your Boobies Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 funded by merchandise sales and individual corporate donations.

Additional insight on this foundation was shared by founder Leigh Hurst:

The Feel Your Boobies Foundation plans an annual Boobies Awareness Campaign which uses creative media outlets to raise awareness among our target population, women under 40. Prior to 2008, our awareness initiatives focused specifically on the use of fashionable apparel and fun products to get people talking about breast cancer and thinking about “feeling their boobies.” To date, we have been nearly 100% supported by our own merchandise sales and have been able to grow our campaign simply through word of mouth. We've sold over 10,000 through word of mouth alone.

In 2008, we are expanding our annual Awareness Campaign into larger scale media that will allow us to reach more people with our message. The use of billboards, print ads, and other major media provides us with an opportunity to really get our target audience’s attention in a way that tshirts alone will not allow us to achieve. The challenge is that these large scale media buys are more expensive than what our current income from tshirts can support. Therefore we are about to launch a Partnership/Sponsorship initiative where companies and individuals can sponsor elements of our campaign through donations and partnerships.

The major initiatives involved in the 2008 Boobies Media Campaign include:

Website Redesign
The new and improved website is designed to provide users with an interactive Boobies experience that is engaging, helpful and allows them to share the Boobies message with others in a creative and fun way.

Boobies Bus
The Boobies Bus is a custom wrapped Toyota Scion that is covered with the Boobies logo. The goal of the car is to spread our message wherever we go. On the car will be plenty of free magnets for the taking so that people can “steal a magnet and spread the word.”

Boobies at the Beach Promotion
This summer there will be plenty of Boobies at the Beach – and by that I mean, Feel Your Boobies silly. We will be running an aerial ad campaign at the South Jersey Shore to spread our message to beachgoers, so be on the lookout for public “boobies feeling” on a beach near you!

Our mission is to utilize innovative and non-traditional methods to promote breast cancer awareness among a younger population. Our goal is to get young girls, and all women, talking about breast cancer and engaging in the proactive, healthy habit of “feeling your boobies”.

Isn't life amazing. How you can knock at an unknown door and find such enchanting people inside, never stops to amaze me. I love it. I love life! Such a wonderful adventure, especially when you focus on a great cause!

Today I stumbled upon a posting on Craiglist and found out about a wonderful upcoming event that I want to share with you and I hope you'll help tell others about it.

Students at Serra High School, in Tierrasanta, San Diego, CA are planning a fundraiser to benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure. This is what their notice on Craigslist showed and I want to try to help increase awareness of:

We are seniors at Serra High School in San Diego and are planning and hosting a Breast Cancer Charity walk to give money to women who cannot afford their breast cancer treatment and to help fund the San Diego affliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer education, treatment and prevention.100 % of the proceeds are being donated!

The walk is around our high school in Tierrasanta and will be a 3-mile course.
So far we have received donations and gift certificates for our raffles from various companies including Betty's Hallmark, Pat & Oscars, Go Girl Energy Drinks, Roccio's Flower Shop, and Dolci Mango.

We are looking for sponsors who will recieve MANY benefits include tons of advertising and media, donations, items or certificates to raffle off, or drink/food donations including cake,brownie,cookie mix etc. for the giant bake sale we are having! All money is tax deductible.

Thinking of New Year's Resolutions

Each New Year's Eve, I reflect on the year and think about my dreams for the coming year. I feel blessed with this past year and am certainly looking forward to 2008! In 2007 not all my dreams became reality, but many did. I didn't spend as much time with friends and family, as I had hoped, but I certainly enjoyed the time that was spent with them. And the most exciting part for me, was meeting more people and hearing their life stories. Of which, I'd like to share a little with you.

Over a very hot Saturday in September I spent the day at the Kobey's Swap Meet, with friends. We gathered not to shop, but to promote some fundraising events for Susan G. Komen For The Cure. A special gift basket was being raffled with 100% of the funds going to Komen. Besides selling raffle tickets for this gift basket, we were trying to increase awareness for "Tennis For The Cure", "Survivor Crop" and other fundraisers which benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure. As the volunteers for this booth are also members of Seaside Quilters, we also sold raffle tickets for a quilt fundraiser for Seaside Quilters.

Many people came by our booth to look at the quilt and many saw our signs for Susan G. Komen For The Cure and popped by to tell their story.

I met a nice school teacher who had lost both of her breasts to breast cancer. She was cancer free for many years and very positive about life and certainly wanting to help spread the word to encourage women to get mammograms on a regular basis.

There was a young mother who came by to chat. She had recently lost her mother to breast cancer and now she too was fighting breast cancer, and recently found out that cancer was in other parts of her body. She has two small children and was enthusiastically fighting her cancer and staying positive to be able to live a long life to enjoy with her children. It is this women that I now think of of New Year's Eve. I pray she is doing well and that 2008 will be a good year for her and her family. My heart goes out to her, not with pity, but in admiration and respect.

I'm not sure if I walked in these ladies shoes, if I could be as positive as they are. They warmed my heart when they shared their stories with me. And when I reflect on 2007 it is their stories that are now woven with my dreams for 2008. My resolution for the coming year is to continue to do what I can to help raise funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure and help fight breast cancer where ever I can.

I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year and that you ensure you get a mammogram in 2008, as appropriate!

Showcase Story: Jilma Baddour

I wanted to tell you about a very special women. She is a lovely women, with a smile that would warm the coldest heart. She is a wonderful mother, with beautiful kids. She is a fantastic wife, with a loving husband. One of those women you meet that you instantly know you want to be able to call her a friend.

Jilma Baddour was a very generous donor to our "Wolfson Microelectronics Tennis For The Cure & Silent Auction" fundraiser, to benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Besides her donations she volunteered time to help with this event and she also signed her son up to be one of our tennis participants.

Like many woman, Jilma works. Her job is an Independant Jewelry Consultant with Cookie Lee Jewelry. I've found her to have an excellent sense of style and very creative. Over the years, I've met many ladies who sell Cookie Lee Jewelry, but I must admit that Jilma is one that standsout. She is so talented, so radiant, so honest and trustworthy and gives so much from her heart, I now think of Jilma when I think of jewerly or think of buying a gift.

Volunteers needed with Quilt Raffle Fundraiser

In the spring of 2008, we are planning on holding a traditional quilt raffle for three beautiful handmade quilts. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure. While this is still in the planning stage, we are in need of volunteers to help commit to selling raffle tickets and help with PR for this fundraiser. The more volunteers, in any state, that help sell tickets, the better luck we'll have raising funds for Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

Komen College Scholarships

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is now accepting applications for the Komen College Scholarship! This award assists undergraduate students under the age of 25 who have lost a parent to breast cancer. Students are awarded up to $10,000 per year at a state-supported college or university in the applicant’s state of residence. This year we will award up to 7 scholarships.

The application is online. The link to the application can be found by going to http://www.komen.org/grant, then clicking on the Awards and Scholarships tab. Look for “College Scholarship Awards”. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2008.

Awards will be announced by March 31, 2008.

Raise Their Racquet For The Cure and participate in Tennis For The Cure and silent auction,

We also had many non-tennis observers who came by to watch the tennis players and participate in the silent auction.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The focus is to prevent breast cancer, by encouraging mammograms and the focus is also on fundraising. As such, I want to encourage you to encourage your mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, and girlfriends to be current on their mammograms...and for you to also do so. I also want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the various fundraising opportunities and to help where you can.

Dreaming of the Cure, a community based group of volunteers committed to raising $50k, is definitely trying to play an active part.

We are organizing "Wolfson Microelectronics Raise Your Racquet For The Cure Tennis Tournament and Silent Auction" on Sat., Oct 13th.
We are also helping with Survivor Crop, a 24 hour scrapbooking event hosted by Ever After Scrapbooks. Their silent auction fundraiser begins Monday, Oct 15th and goes all week long. This auction closes midnight Sat., Oct 21st at the big Survivor Crop event. My recent focus has continued to my goal to raise funds for Susan G. Komen. I'm continuing to look for a place to host a fundraising event in San Diego County in Fall '07 (worst case Spring '08). I'm also working with a wonderful group of volunteers who are making beautiful quilts, which will eventually be used at this future event.

The quilt shown was made by Bobbie Zinker and will be one of many quilts used to raise funds for Susan G. Komen.

An Update on my progress to raise $50k

I'm continuing to work on my plans to raise $50k for Susan G. Komen. I've just retired May 31st from HP and now view I have time to really dive into my volunteering projects. For now, I'm wanting to use this post to provide an update on progress to date.

On the quilting front, I'm continuing to quilt with other volunteers to make quilts that will be used to raise funds. Many are now finished and absolutely beautiful. I need to take photos and get them posted for you to see. As a group of volunteers, we meet monthly and are having great fun at our quilt sew-cials while also making quilts that will eventually be used to raise funds.

I've continued to research to determine the best way to raise funds. This research has helped me make some wonderful contacts, all across the country, that are focused on similar objectives. They have unique approaches, but I can leverage from their experiences. I'd like to share a little insight on these organizations:

Rock For the Cure is a non-profit organization based in Indiana. They have held fundraisers that have focused on various activities, such as motorcycle rides, concerts, etc. While they support Susan G. Komen Org, the Rock For the Cure primarily raises funds that go directly to research for breast cancer, treatment, and to education. Quilt Pink is a program sponsored by American Patchwork & Quilting magazine where quilts are auctioned, throughout the year, via eBay. All funds raised are donated to the Susan G. Komen, Org. The program encourages quilt shops and quilt guilds to organize quilting events annually. The next event is scheduled on Sat., Sept 21-23, 2007. I'm definitely going to try to promote this event with as many quilt shops as I can, and spread the word with fellow quilters. I hope anyone reading this blog will also help spread the word and get a local quilt shop to help host such a quilting sew-cial. The www.quiltpink.com website has information to help quilt shops promote this invent, as well as let quilters know how to donate quilts. To clarify, donating quilts to this fundraising auction is not limited to quilts made at their annual September quilt sew-cial.

Quilt for a Cause is a non-profit organization based in Tuscon, Arizona. This group has focused on making quilts and hosting events where quilts are auctioned. They have auctioned over 545 quilts to raise $120,000 and held expenses to less than 1%. Their mission focuses on all forms of women's breast cancer, with an emphasis on breast and gynecological cancer research. I learned that they have also recently adopted a single mother, whos is a nurse, dealing with breast cancer. Quilt for a Cause and local quilt guilds in Tuscon are raising funds for this person, as well as trying to provide emotional support. Sutter Medical Center - Breast Cancer Quilt Auction
A community in Sacramento uses quilting to raise funds for Sutter Medical Center for research and treatment of breast cancer. Every three years, quilters throughout Northern California use their skills to raise these funds by donating beautiful quilts for the auction. Rosie at Rosie's Calico Cupboard - Rosie is a famous quilt store owner. I know she is famous as I've heard quilt store owners in Canada, as well as many places in the US., talk about Rosie's Calico Cupboard. And, as I live in San Diego, I know what a wonderful quilt shop Rosie owns, and how much she does for various charities. But for now I want to list her on my blog as Rosie is helping to fight against breast cancer by walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-day Race for the Cure in San Diego, Nov '07 and she is in need of sponsors. Starting Point

My motivation to help fight breast cancer came from having several friends have a personal experience with breast cancer, the continual awareness that so many people were affected.
And I felt I needed to do something.

I pondered what could I do to help? I have experience with various fundraisers for various charities and thought I should launch an effort to help fight breast cancer. But what would be the best course for me was unclear.

Turning 50 in November '06, I decided to have a birthday party. Having not had a birthday party since I was 16, I did't want to be in the spotlight. But I enjoyed quilt sew-cials and I also had decided that in my 50th year I wanted to raise $50k for Susan G. Komen Org. Thus, I kicked off my 50th year with a wonderful birthday sew-cial where friends joined me to celebrate my birthday and to help make quilts that would eventually be used to raise funds for Susan G. Komen Org.

As a thank you for all my friends that came to my birthday quilt sew-cial I gave each of them a pink bag that I had made.

I now have a group that gets together monthly to make quilts which will eventually be used to raise funds for Susan G. Komen Org. I'm currently exploring various venues for raising funds, focusing in on a fundraising event this fall. Ideas being explored include: dinner/silent auction, wine tasting/silent auction, a scrapbooking weekend, ebay auction, etc.. I'm definitely looking for ideas, as well as volunteers to help. As I'm based in San Diego, the ultimate venue will be held here in San Diego. Tentatively, I'm looking at an event sometime in the October 2007 window. I hope this gives us plenty of time to make quilts, solicit donations for silent auction/raffle items, and finalize plans for a wonderful fundraising events.

As I continue down this journey I'm planning on updating this blog to show my progress.
